Some of you may remember the ABC Special Of The Monkees.
Some of you may have watched this show back in 1997,
when it first came on...
not knowing what the hell was going on.
Some of you, however, may not have ever seen this special: only heard distantly
of such tales of it with longing, with wonder.
Well, most of you may have realized, you were not missing much.
And yet... and yet, there is a love. A love for something this horrifying.
A sadomasochistic kind of love. A love that could help us all grow together by embracing it, and
accepting that yes, The Monkees did do this. Denial will only go so far.
So, I feel we all could
use a moment of zen, by embracing this love, of being in touch
with the ABC Special Of The Monkees.
I took all these from
monkees.net.
Anyone feel free to contribute.
Look at this logo: the bright, gaudy, florescent, psuedo-psychedelic
colors. Something one might think more reminiscent of the eighties, than the sixties which is it trying to emulate,
although it is truly a 1997 endeavor.
It was during that awkward phase of 1997 where no one knew what year
it was anyway, and we could get away with this kind of aesthetically unpleasing confusion: a more innocent
time. The logo is trying to look like it's from the sixties while in our
hearts we are accepting it's attempt to be in the sixties,
in place of it's horrid outcome. This means seeing an inner beauty within it, and not judging this image by its appearance. We can all grow a little if we learn to look at the world more like this.
Feel it's bright, childlike essense screaming against the white background
of this website. Breathe in the sunny hues of color. Experience
the depths of the deeper shades of the guitar logo.
If you love something this ugly, you know it's real love.
Now here we see four old men in an ensemble of board shorts. Davy appears
to be interviewing for a part time job as a traffic warning sign. Micky is
looking [relatively] stable and sane in a red number... Peter, comfortably not afraid
of seizure-causing-prints anymore than he was in the sixties, Michael
taking Peter's lead. There is a way to look sexy
at the age of 60: I don't think this is the way.
[[[[[[[[[[[[ Wah don't hit me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]]]]]]]]]]
Look at the beautiful waves behind them, the magnificent rock, the soft,
dusty sand they graze their feet over in contemplation... The virulent
sky, filled with rancor. The ABC logo attached to Mike's leg.
Michael is now expressing a form of tai chi he used to channel his annoyance and anger in order
to withstand being in this episode. He wants us all to understand
that suffering is sacred, and that is why we watch this.
Yeah, I don't know.
Micky actually looks good [*COUGH*]. I don't know if he's wearing armor,
or he put a pot on his head... but I must say, Micky wears a pot well.
Here's Davy, being... Davy.
ABC really likes these logos, don't they? You'd think they wouldn't be proud of this.
That concludes Being In Touch With The ABC Special Of The Monkees.
I really don't have much else to say in conclusion, except during the scene where they are
singing about "Antartica"... that scene really moves me. I feel like I'm there
with them, and that we all lived in Antartica. In a past life.
I also feel like they can sing "lobotomy" to the word, "antartica", which
also well summarizes this special.
